Running MetaTrader on a VPS for Forex trading

By ColossusCloud's Team February 11, 2026

Why do Forex traders run MetaTrader on a VPS?

Forex markets operate 24 hours a day, five days a week. If you run Expert Advisors (EAs) or any automated trading strategy, your MetaTrader platform needs to be online continuously. A home computer introduces risks that can interrupt trading: power outages, ISP downtime, Windows updates that force a reboot, or simply forgetting to leave the machine on overnight.

A Windows VPS solves all of these problems. Your MetaTrader installation runs on enterprise infrastructure with redundant power, networking, and cooling. Expert Advisors keep executing even when your home computer is off. You connect via Remote Desktop (RDP) to manage your setup, and when you disconnect, MetaTrader keeps running in the background.

Beyond uptime, a VPS provides lower latency to your broker’s trading servers. Instead of routing through consumer Internet hops, your orders travel over short, direct fiber paths from a carrier-neutral data center. This means faster order execution and less slippage, which is especially important for scalping strategies and high-frequency Expert Advisors.

Which Windows Server version should I use?

We recommend Windows Server 2022 or 2025 for MetaTrader. Both are 64-bit operating systems that fully support MT4 and MT5.

The key advantage of Windows Server over desktop Windows (7, 10, or 11) is that Server editions do not force automatic reboots for updates. An unexpected reboot during active trading can close MetaTrader, halt your Expert Advisors, and leave positions unmanaged. With Windows Server, you control exactly when updates are applied.

All Windows Server editions on ColossusCloud come with genuine Microsoft licensing through our SPLA partnership.

How much RAM and CPU do I need?

Here are general guidelines:

  • 1 MetaTrader instance with a few EAs: 2 GB RAM, 2 vCPUs
  • Multiple MT4/MT5 instances or many currency pairs: 4 GB RAM, 4 vCPUs
  • Heavy backtesting alongside live trading: 8 GB RAM or more

MetaTrader itself is not extremely resource-hungry, but Expert Advisors vary widely. Some simple trend-following EAs use minimal resources, while complex multi-pair scalping strategies with custom indicators can consume significant RAM and CPU.

ColossusCloud bills by the hour, so you can start with a smaller plan and upgrade at any time without reinstalling. If you are unsure, start with 4 GB and monitor resource usage through Windows Task Manager.

Which data center location is best?

The ideal location depends on where your broker hosts their trading servers:

  • New York / US East Coast brokers: Choose Ashburn, Virginia. This data center sits in Virginia’s “Data Center Alley” with direct connectivity to New York financial infrastructure.
  • London / European brokers: Choose Amsterdam. Direct fiber links to London, Frankfurt, and other European financial hubs.
  • Asia-Pacific brokers: Choose Singapore for the lowest latency to APAC trading servers.
  • US Central / Western brokers: Dallas, Las Vegas, or Silicon Valley depending on your broker’s location.

Before committing to live trading, deploy a test VPS in your target location and measure the ping time to your broker’s server. ColossusCloud’s hourly billing means a test server for a few hours costs very little.

Can I run multiple MetaTrader instances?

Yes. You can install and run multiple MT4 or MT5 instances on the same Windows VPS, each connected to a different broker or trading account. This is common among traders who:

  • Manage separate strategies across different brokers
  • Run copy trading setups
  • Trade different currency pairs with different EAs
  • Keep a demo account alongside live accounts for testing

Allocate enough RAM for each instance. A rough guide is 500 MB to 1 GB per MetaTrader instance, depending on the number of charts and indicators loaded.

How do I get started?

  1. Sign up at the Client Portal
  2. Click Deploy a new VM in the sidebar menu
  3. Select a Windows Server template (we recommend Windows Server 2022 or 2025)
  4. Choose the data center closest to your broker
  5. Select a plan with at least 2 GB RAM (4 GB recommended)
  6. Set a password and click Deploy
  7. Check your email for the server IP address and RDP connection details
  8. Connect via Remote Desktop and install MetaTrader from your broker’s website
  9. Log in with your trading credentials, load your Expert Advisors, and you are live

Your VPS will be ready in under 5 minutes. Once MetaTrader is running, you can disconnect from Remote Desktop and your EAs will keep trading around the clock.
